How Thailand Assigns Plates
License plates are managed by the Department of Land Transport (DLT). Ordinary registration takes the next number in sequence — there is no pick-a-number counter. The one legal route to a specific number is the DLT's lucky-number auction, whose proceeds go to the road safety fund. How the Lucky Number Auction Works
- Auctions are run by the DLT — Bangkok plates nearly every week, provincial plates on a rotating schedule, with online and in-person bidding
- Bidders register with ID (passport for foreigners) and place a deposit; winners pay within a set deadline
- Numbers on offer include double, triple and quadruple repeats (8888, 9999) and sequences; quadruple repeats are the premium tier
- Price reference: desirable numbers start around tens of thousands of baht, while 8888/9999 with popular letter prefixes have sold for millions
- Auctioned numbers come on specially designed graphic plates, instantly distinguishable from ordinary white plates
What Rights Come With an Auctioned Number?
- Transferable: the number is tradeable property — it can move with the car or be sold separately
- Keepable: sell the car and retain the number for your next vehicle
- Inheritable: ownership is registered personally and passes as part of an estate
Sequentially assigned numbers carry none of these rights — the number goes back to the DLT when the car is scrapped or re-registered elsewhere.
Red Plates: What Are the Limits?
Red plates (ป้ายแดง) are dealer-issued temporary plates for new cars awaiting registration, and they come with real restrictions:
- Legally no driving between sunset and sunrise (emergencies must be logged in the accompanying logbook)
- Trips out of the province must be recorded in the logbook
- The logbook must be carried in the car and can be inspected by police
- Red-plate cars cannot pass annual inspection, and some insurance claims are complicated by red-plate status
The white plate normally arrives within two weeks to two months. Driving on a red plate long-term is an offense that attracts fines; if a dealer drags out registration, you can complain to the DLT.
Can Foreigners Bid and Own Lucky Numbers?
Yes. There is no nationality restriction — register with your passport, and the ownership conditions match those for owning the vehicle. Be aware the auction documents and process are entirely in Thai: understand the bid increments, payment deadlines and deposit forfeiture rules before bidding. Agents offer proxy bidding; verify credentials and fee structures to avoid markups.
FAQ
How much does an 8888 plate cost?
It depends on the letter prefix and plate category. Quadruple repeats with unpopular letters may go for a few hundred thousand baht, while sought-after prefixes have exceeded ten million. On a budget, triple repeats and sequences trade from tens of thousands of baht.
Does the seller's lucky plate come with a used car?
Not necessarily. An auctioned number is separate property, and the seller can retain it before transfer. Confirm in writing whether the plate is included in the deal — a car wearing 9999 and the same car with an ordinary number after transfer are very different purchases.
Will insurance pay if a red-plate car has an accident?
It depends on when the policy took effect and whether the car was being used lawfully. Most insurers cover cars during the red-plate period, but unlawful use — night driving without a logbook entry, for instance — can become grounds for refusal.
