Two Tracks: Public and Private
Thailand has some of the best healthcare in Southeast Asia, and Bangkok is a global medical tourism destination. The system splits into two tracks: public hospitals (university and government hospitals) with low prices and excellent doctors but long waits and limited foreign-language service, and private hospitals with comfortable facilities, easy appointments and multilingual staff at three to ten times the cost. Minor ailments don't need a hospital at all: clinic chains and pharmacies (Thai pharmacists can advise on over-the-counter treatment) handle most colds and stomach trouble for a few hundred baht.
The Private Hospital Outpatient Process
- Book: website, app or phone; premium hospitals have international coordinators you can request. Walk-ins are accepted, with waits varying by department
- Register: bring your passport for first-visit registration; present your insurance card for direct billing or prepare to self-pay
- Consult: a nurse takes vital signs before the doctor; most Thai doctors speak English, and premium hospitals provide interpreters
- Pay and collect medicine: the hospital pharmacy dispenses directly; direct-billing insurers settle with the hospital and you pay only your share
- Keep the paperwork: diagnosis letters, test reports and receipts matter for claims and for follow-up care elsewhere
Emergencies and Ambulances
- 1669 is the national free emergency medical line; the tourist police at 1155 offer multilingual help
- Private hospitals run their own paid ambulance lines with fast response; for serious cases you can request a specific hospital
- In Bangkok traffic, a taxi to the ER is often faster than waiting for an ambulance in non-critical situations

Choosing an Annual Checkup Package
Health checkups are among the best-value services in Thai private healthcare: basic packages (blood panel, lipids and glucose, liver and kidney function, chest X-ray, ECG) run about 3,000-8,000 THB; 40+ packages adding tumor markers, ultrasound and a stress test run about 10,000-25,000 THB. How to choose:
- Pick the standard package for your age and sex — resist upsold add-ons and order any missing test individually
- Hospitals discount in low season (rainy season, early year); online and walk-in prices can differ
- Request an English report for continuity of care in your home country
- Book a morning slot for fasting tests; most results come back the same afternoon
Pharmacies and Prescription Drugs
- Pharmacies are everywhere, and many drugs that need prescriptions elsewhere (including some antibiotics) are sold with pharmacist guidance — the risk of misuse is yours
- For chronic conditions, get hospital prescriptions and keep records; carry documentation when traveling with prescription medicine
- Cannabis is partially legal in Thailand — foods and drinks containing it are labeled, but not always prominently; take care with children and sensitive individuals

A private hospital outpatient visit (doctor fee plus basic medication) runs about 1,500-4,000 THB; public hospitals start from a few hundred baht. Inpatient care is where the gap explodes: private room rates run 5,000-20,000 THB per night, and an appendectomy at a private hospital commonly totals 150,000-300,000 THB. Do foreigners get any public healthcare benefits?
Foreign employees with a work permit who pay social security (SSO) receive care at their designated hospital covering standard outpatient and inpatient treatment.
